Jacques Marie Mage Glasses Review

Others

Hello, I’m Mr. Linen.

I love glasses.

My eyesight is actually 20/10 (perfect vision), but I simply love glasses as objects, so I wear them as fashion accessories.

Today, I’d like to introduce one of my favorite pairs from the brand Jacques Marie Mage.

What is Jacques Marie Mage?

Jacques Marie Mage is arguably one of the most talked-about brands in the eyewear world today.

Founded in the United States by a French designer, the brand produces its eyewear in small batches, handcrafted in Sabae, Fukui—Japan’s renowned center for eyewear manufacturing.

There are already plenty of articles and videos about the brand, but to summarize its defining characteristic in one word: luxury.

Every model is released in limited quantities, each with a serial number. Once sold out, the exact same piece is never reproduced—an approach that cleverly enhances its exclusivity.

What I Bought

The model I purchased is called DEVAUX.

Here’s a description quoted from a respected Japanese eyewear retailer:

A bold shape and volume inspired by 1940s French vintage eyewear.

The popular but discontinued model “LOEWY” has been reborn as “DEVAUX.”

The finishing, with sharply defined transitions between surfaces, is exceptional.

The upper front edge is cut at a sharp angle—not obtuse or right—which seems to be a key design focus.

It feels like a bold step forward from vintage inspiration.

Simply put, it’s extremely well made.

And undeniably beautiful.

The inner rim features a “TV cut,” preserving a vintage aesthetic detail.

The temples are slightly longer.

Given the weight of the front, this length helps maintain balance.

The 43mm (1.69 inches) lens size also makes it suitable even for stronger prescriptions.

The color I chose is a transparent brown.

The color name is “Whiskey”—an absolutely perfect name. (As someone who admires the image of enjoying jazz, cigars, and whiskey in the evening, this really resonates with me.)

This model is currently sold out, but similar designs now retail for over $1000 USD.

I bought mine about a year and a half ago for just over $600 USD.

Even then, it was a big decision—but with prices rising so dramatically, I doubt I’ll be able to buy another anytime soon.

I’ve shared a few photos—aren’t they just beautiful? Maybe I’m biased.

A massive 10mm (0.39 inches) thick frame, finely engraved metal core visible through the acetate, and a perfect mix of sharp edges and smooth curves.

The default lenses came in a subtle blue-gray tint, but I swapped them for lightly tinted yellow lenses so I could wear them indoors more comfortably.

During bright summer days, I switch back to the original lenses, and use the lighter ones for the rest of the year.

Impressions

After actually owning them, the biggest satisfaction comes from the sheer sense of ownership.

Just looking at them puts me in a good mood.

The design is quite bold, so they’re not the easiest to pair with formal suits—I mainly use them for casual outfits.

They’re also quite heavy due to the thick frame, so comfort isn’t their strong point. I usually need to take them off once every hour to rest my ears and nose.

But honestly, none of that really matters—the beauty of the object itself outweighs everything.

Sometimes I dim the lights, put on some jazz, pour myself a glass of whiskey, and hold the glasses up to the light—enjoying the clarity of the whiskey-colored frame. It’s a simple but deeply satisfying moment.

There are countless other models and colors I’d love to own, but realistically, that’s not happening anytime soon.

At this rate, I wouldn’t be surprised if prices climb to around $1 500 USD in a few years.

So, this may be unsolicited advice—but if you’re considering a pair, I’d recommend buying sooner rather than later.
